How to Choose an SEO Agency in Sri Lanka (Without Wasting Money)
September 7, 2026Learning how to choose an SEO agency in Sri Lanka starts with ignoring the pitch. Most SEO pitches in Sri Lanka read the same: years of experience, a promise of page one, a price that never changes no matter what you sell. None of that tells you whether the work will actually happen.
Before you sign anything, check three things: what they’ve actually ranked before, who does the work month to month, and what you can walk away from if it doesn’t work. This guide covers all three, plus real pricing and the questions worth asking on the first call.
How to Choose an SEO Agency in Sri Lanka: What Actually Matters
Ask for proof, not a pitch deck. A real agency can show you two or three keywords they’ve ranked, with the position before and the position now, and the month it happened. If they can only talk in percentages (“increased traffic by 300%”), ask for the actual keywords behind that number.
Location fit matters more than people think. Most SEO agencies in Sri Lanka are based in Colombo and built their process around Colombo clients. If your business is in Galle, Ambalangoda, or anywhere else in the Southern Province, ask directly whether they’ve worked local geo-terms before, like “seo agency in [town]” or “[service] near [town].” A Colombo-only playbook doesn’t automatically transfer to a smaller city.
Find out who touches the account. Some agencies sell you a senior consultant on the discovery call, then hand the actual work to a junior team member or an outside contractor once you sign. Ask by name who will be doing the keyword research, the content, and the technical fixes.
Check what a report actually contains. A monthly report should show ranking positions for your target keywords against previous months, not just a screenshot of Google Analytics traffic or a list of “tasks completed.”
Read the contract length before the price. SEO needs 3 to 6 months to show real movement, so a 3-month minimum is normal and fair. A 12-month lock-in with no exit clause protects the agency more than it protects you.
Agency vs freelancer vs in-house
Each option can work. It depends on your budget and how much you can check the work yourself.
| Option | Typical cost in Sri Lanka | Main risk | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freelancer | Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 30,000/month | One person, one point of failure. If they take on more clients or move on, your account stalls. | Very small budgets, simple sites, or a founder who can review the work directly. |
| Small agency | Rs. 40,000 to Rs. 100,000+/month | Higher cost, but usually has more than one person who knows your account. | Businesses that need consistency and can’t afford a campaign that quietly stops. |
| In-house hire | Rs. 60,000 to Rs. 120,000+/month salary, plus tools | You manage it day to day, and you need someone who already knows SEO to check the work. | Larger businesses running content or e-commerce at volume. |
A freelancer at Rs. 15,000 a month looks cheaper than an agency at Rs. 40,000. It is, until they pick up three more clients and your account slips to the bottom of the list. That’s the trade-off: lower cost against lower certainty.
Red flags specific to the Sri Lankan market
- A guaranteed #1 ranking, with a date attached. No agency controls Google’s algorithm to that degree.
- A pitch that never names your competitors. If they haven’t looked at who already ranks for your keywords, they haven’t researched your case.
- Reports full of “SEO score” percentages or traffic charts, with no actual keyword positions listed anywhere.
- One flat price for every business, regardless of industry, site size, or how competitive your market is. That’s a template price, not a quote.
- No Sri Lanka-specific proof anywhere in their own marketing. Search “SEO agency in Sri Lanka” and a lot of what comes up is generic content that could describe any country, with no named local client, no Rs. figures, no local competitor mentioned. If an agency’s own content reads like that, their client work often does too.
Questions worth asking on the first call
- Can you show me two keywords you’ve ranked for a business like mine, with the position before and after?
- Who on your team will actually work on my account, and can I get their name?
- What happens in month 1, and what’s different by month 4?
- What’s not included in this price?
- Can I cancel with 30 days’ notice, or am I locked into a term?
- What does a monthly report look like? Can I see a sample?
A real agency answers all six without hesitation. A reseller or a template pitch usually stumbles on questions 2 and 4.
What SEO costs in Sri Lanka
Pricing generally falls into three bands: a one-time setup around Rs. 15,000 for a small business that needs a keyword audit and basic on-page cleanup, a mid-tier retainer around Rs. 40,000 a month for ongoing content and on-page work, and a full-service retainer from Rs. 100,000 a month for multi-channel campaigns. We break down what’s included at each tier in How Much Does SEO Cost in Sri Lanka? and on our pricing page.
A checklist before you sign
- Get 2 to 3 real ranking examples, with dates.
- Confirm who does the work, by name.
- Check the contract length and exit terms.
- Ask for a sample monthly report.
- Compare the price against what’s actually included, not just the headline number.
- Ask if they’ve worked your specific region before.
Frequently asked questions
Is a freelancer or an agency better for SEO in Sri Lanka?
It depends on your budget and how much you can check the work yourself. A freelancer costs less but is a single point of failure. An agency costs more but usually has backup if one person is unavailable.
How much should I budget for SEO in Sri Lanka?
Budgets typically range from a Rs. 15,000 one-time setup fee to Rs. 100,000 or more a month for a full campaign. See our cost guide for what each tier includes.
How long should the contract be?
Three months is a reasonable minimum, since SEO needs that long to show movement. Avoid a 12-month lock-in with no way to exit if the work isn’t happening.
Should I hire a Colombo agency if my business is outside Colombo?
You can, but ask directly whether they’ve worked local geo-keywords for towns outside Colombo before. Many agencies build their whole process around Colombo clients and haven’t tested it anywhere else.
The short version
The agencies worth hiring can show you real numbers, name the person doing the work, and let you leave if it isn’t working. Everything else in the pitch is decoration.
