How to Choose an SEO Agency in Sri Lanka
September 7, 2026Why is my website not ranking on Google?
Most of the time it comes down to one of four things: Google hasn’t indexed your site properly, your site has no backlinks or authority yet, it’s slow or badly optimized, or your content doesn’t match what people are actually searching for. Before you touch a single setting, check whether Google has even indexed your site. That takes 30 seconds and rules out the simplest cause first.
Step 1: check if Google has indexed your site
Open Google and search site:yourdomain.com, replacing “yourdomain.com” with your actual domain. If pages show up, Google knows your site exists. If nothing shows up, indexing is your problem, not rankings.
For a more exact answer, log into Google Search Console and check the Coverage report. It tells you exactly how many pages are indexed and lists any pages Google skipped, along with the reason.
The most common reasons small business sites in Sri Lanka don’t rank
- The domain is new. Google takes time to trust a new site, often several months, even with good content on it.
- No backlinks. If no other website links to yours, Google has little signal that your site is worth showing above competitors who do have links.
- Slow hosting. A lot of local sites run on cheap shared hosting or a heavy page builder theme with no caching set up. Page speed is a ranking factor, and a slow site also loses visitors before Google even gets a chance to rank it.
- Google Business Profile isn’t claimed or is incomplete. For any business with a physical location or service area, this affects local map rankings directly, not just your website’s organic ranking.
- Content doesn’t match search intent. A page can be well written and still not rank if it answers a different question than what people are typing into Google.
- Technical blocks. A stray line in robots.txt, a missing sitemap, or duplicate pages generated by a builder plugin can all quietly stop pages from being indexed at all.
How to check which one applies to you
- Run the
site:yourdomain.comsearch above. - Check Search Console’s Coverage report for indexing errors.
- Run your homepage through PageSpeed Insights and note the mobile score specifically, since Google ranks based on the mobile version of your site.
- Search your business name plus your town. If your Google Business Profile doesn’t appear, it likely isn’t claimed or verified.
- Search your main target keyword and look at what’s already ranking. If the top results are guides or comparisons and your page is a short sales pitch, that’s a content mismatch.
What actually fixes it
Fix indexing and technical errors first. None of the rest matters if Google can’t crawl your pages. Then claim and complete your Google Business Profile if you serve a local area. After that, work on page speed and content that actually matches what people search for. Backlinks take longer to build and matter most once the basics are solid.
This is the same order we follow with new clients: audit, fix technical issues, then build content and links. Skipping straight to content or backlinks while the site has indexing problems wastes the effort.
When a self-fix isn’t enough
If you’ve checked all of the above and pages are indexed, reasonably fast, and still not moving, the issue is usually competition or content depth rather than something broken. That’s a slower, ongoing fix rather than a one-time setting. See how long SEO actually takes for a realistic timeline, or how much it costs to have someone handle this for you.
Frequently asked questions
How long after fixing indexing issues will my site rank?
Getting indexed can happen within days. Ranking well for competitive keywords still takes months, since indexing and ranking are separate problems.
Can a brand new website rank on page 1?
Yes, for low-competition, specific, local keywords. For broad national keywords, a brand new domain almost never ranks on page 1 quickly.
Do I need to hire someone, or can I fix this myself?
The indexing and technical checks above are things any business owner can do. Ongoing content, backlinks, and ranking for competitive keywords is where most people run out of time or expertise.
